After beginning operations as a facility for assisting artists in September 2013, Yosuga Art Space was able to welcome its second year anniversary in September last year. Thank you very much for your support.
So far we have had 2 Artists-In-Residence, and about 150 Short Stay guests, coming from Japan and abroad.
Since the founding, I have been committed to pricing with the word ‘assistance’ in mind, minimizing additional fees and charging as little as possible.
However operating under the current financial situation is increasingly difficult, as can be seen by Yosuga guidelines’ requests for guests to minimize their energy usage.
Even so, the rent and utility monies brought in are continuing to fail to meet operational minimums. With every passing day a fiscal deficit increases that is surpassing my ability to manage privately.
In these two years the Yosuga Art Space has been described as ‘a place for healing and peace’ and ‘a place with the warmth of one’s own family’.
With gratitude for these kind words, I have been reconsidering the value of Yosuga and the most appropriate way of managing the space. In this light I feel that the time has come to reexamine the way in which our program’s assistance to artists may continue into the future.
Obviously, offering ‘assistance’ to artists while being unable to sustain oneself will eventually lead to financial disaster. That is only self-sacrifice, which will of course impede the fundamental Yosuga mission of generating laughter and happiness.
I believe that those who have graciously stayed with us understand that the value of the Yosuga Art Space is not simply found in rock-bottom pricing. Therefore, in order to sustainably continue to provide artists with a home away from home, Yosuga’s Short Stay pricing will be adjusted beginning February 1, 2016.
The new pricing is a base level, and donations from guests who enjoyed the Yosuga space’s hospitality are greatly appreciated.
In the case of artists who are unable to manage the new price structure, please enquire with Yosuga staff directly to see whether accommodations may be made.
